Chapter5

The next week, there was much less tension between them. They walked around giving each other small secret smiles, and working in lighter, easier moods than they had all week.

When Nina sat down at her desk partway through the morning, Tito leaned over and set his chin in his hand, looking at her with a knowing grin.

“Did you see your booty man?” he asked with a wink.

She turned and looked at him with raised eyebrows. “What?”

He laughed at her. “Don’t you ‘what’ me.” He shook his head. “You are in the best mood I’ve seen you in for the last week. You saw your honey over the weekend, didn’t you?” he asked with an ear-to-ear grin.

She felt her cheeks get warm and she looked away from him.

“Okay,” he said with a smile, “You might not be sharing the details this time, but I know when my girl is happy, and there’s only one thing that makes you that happy. You got a little, or a lot, and I am so glad to know it.”

She laughed at him and returned to her work.

Things seemed easy and fun over Monday and Tuesday, except for Craig who was determined to get Nina to go have dinner with him by the end of the week. He’d left a greeting card and coffee on her desk, and had dropped by three times a day to chat with her and try to convince her to go out with him. It seemed that Julian’s watchful eye was constantly on her, especially when Craig was around.

By Thursday, the mood between Nina and Julian had shifted again, and it felt to her as if it was growing much darker. She focused more intently on her work, and their shared smiles had disappeared.

Thursday at lunch, Craig reappeared with red roses in a gorgeous vase and asked Nina out again. She knew that her proposal was going to be crossing his desk soon and she knew she needed his approval on it. She tried not to think of him holding back on it, but then couldn’t get over the fact that she was constantly holding back on him. She declined his dinner invitation, citing work as her excuse, and he shook his head and walked back to his desk.

As he walked away, Julian watched from the office door and glared hotly. “Nina!” he called a little sharply. “Please come into my office.”

She looked up at him in surprise and walked into his office. He closed the door behind her.

“What can I do for you?” she asked.

He paced slightly and kept his back to her for a moment. “I heard from the Silicon Valley team. They love your idea of having a rep in different areas of the world to handle your social media. They’re going to use that model, not only for this company, but for several others.”

She grinned happily. “Well, that’s wonderful news!”

He frowned and turned to face her. “Congratulations.”

Julian looked up at her and she saw fire in his eyes.
